Be prepared

Lake Superior is a beautiful and powerful Great Lake that needs to be respected.  Weather conditions on the lake can change quickly so it is important to be prepared.  The best times to paddle are early in the morning and late afternoon/evening.  It is necessary to pay attention to changing wind direction as white-caps can easily develop even in the Bay.  Keep yourself safer by:
  • Having an accurate appraisal of your paddling skills
  • Staying attuned to the wind and weather conditions
  • Being aware of the wakes from power boats and large ships
  • Making good choices about where to paddle.
  • Do not enter any of the small caves during wavy conditions.
  • Dressing appropriately.  Even in the middle of the summer, Lake Superior can be very cold.
